Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that occur in nearshore
areas around the world (Hemminga and Duarte, 2000; Green and
Short, 2003). Seagrasses play key ecological roles in the marine
environment, including organic carbon production and trophic
transfers to adjacent habitats (Costanza et al., 1997). They are major
primary producers, supporting the high productivity of associated
animals including commercially important fish and large
