These students seem to relate electron sharing to covalent bonding, yet did not consider the influence of electronegativity and the resultant unequal electron sharing. As a result of the analysis of the students’ responses, some misconceptions were identified. These misconceptions were discussed under the categories of bond polarity, molecular shape, polarity of molecules, intermolecular forces, the octet rule, and lattices. The misconceptions identified are depicted in Table I.
