magnolia are believed to be some of the most primitive flowering plants. evidence of fossil remains are found in rock belonging to the tertiary period ( 2-65 million years ago ). at that time much of the present arctic zone was probably free of ice and enjoying a European climate typical of the present day. vast forests encircled the arctic region, with species of magnolia, liriodendron, liquidambar, ginkgo, and many other enjoying widespread distribution.
