Insulin secretion in type 2 diabetes
Interpretation of some studies of hyperinsulinaemia is difficult. Matching diabetic patients and controls for body weight has not always been given sufficient attentics. It is clear that if oral glucose tolerance test are performed in obese type 2 diabetic patient and the result compared with dose form non-diabetic lean control, the obese diabetic patients will have higher blood glucose and plasma insulin concentration than the lean non-diabetic patients, leading to the conclusion that they are insulin resistance. If matched with appropriate obese non-diabetic control, however, insulin responses in the diabetic patients are reduced, leading to the conclusion that there is also an element of insulin deficiency.
