Typhoons yphoons destroy about 1.5% of the national product of South East Asia countries every year. Much ot his damage cannot be avoided even by using the most modern technology. However, because of the need to give people as much warning as possible, a Typhoon Warning Center was established on the island of Guam in 1959 to keep watch on the movement of typhoons. Nevertheless, problems still remain because 24 hour forecasts of storm movement can be inaccurate. For example, in 1960 yphoon Mary appeared to be heading for land about 70 miles west of Hong Kong, but she changed course during the night and smashed through the center of the colony in the early hours of the morning. This typhoon caused 11 deaths, 11 people were missing, 120 were injured and about 300 boats to be sunk or wrecked.
