The design of animal enclosures is one of the most
complex aspects of zoo development. Each different
species has its specific needs when it comes to housing
and caring for it. When designing an enclosure it
is important to design it in a way that guarantees
safety and comfort for animals, staff and visitors. An
enclosure should be suited for animals to live in, suited
for staff to work in and suited for visitors to look at.
When designing an animal enclosure, there are four
important things to keep in mind:
• Safety requirements
• Needs of animals
• Needs of staff
• Needs of visitors
