Discharge criteria for the PACU
Discharge criteria must be defined for the PACU, and if a patient fails to meet thses criteria then recovery staff should seek advice from the anaesthetist regarding consideration for referral admission to a high-care area (i.e. HDU).
Standard discharge criteria include:
• conscious level: rousable to voice, orientated to near preoperative level
• airway: able to cough (i.e. return to full airway reflexes), a clear airway
• breathing: respiratory rate over 8, under 16 (adult population), adequate depth, not odstructed, well oxy genated
• circulation: stable cardio-pulmonary rate/rhythm within acceptable limits, no ongoing unstable blood loss
• pain/emesis:controlled
• documentation: analgesic, fluid and anti-emetic regimens prescribed, theatre documentation completed – either physically or electronically
• temperature: over 36 ◦C, under 38◦C
• discharge location: safe and appropriate area to which patient can be transferred
