Hi Nan,
this will be the last time you will hear from me.
After my frustrations have settled, I have been thinking a lot and decided to move back to Germany at the end of October. I just want to thank you for the few happy moments we have spend together, but I also want to point out again a very serious matter that bothers me a lot. The children in the pictures are clearly working. You can not deny that. There is no other explanation. It is an awful practice and still very common in the thai fishing industry. Even if you claim that the police and authorities are monitoring your business, we both know it is impossible to do that 24 hours a day and thai police have a history of corruption too. In the end it comes down to the employers if the children are going to be exploited or not. No authority can check every business in their province all the time. So, these children should not be exploited any longer and should have the opportunity to go to school and learn something for their future. If you employ the parents, they should get paid enough to be able to afford at least a basic education for their kids. Even if the children already go to school, they should not be working in their free time. They should be able to play and learn skills that will help them later on in life. Similar to the opportunities that you give to your own daughter. I hope you change your mind about this matter and take the necessary steps to prevent any future exploitation of kids in your business. It might result in less profit for yourself but it is the right thing to do.
I know you can do it.
About the phone: it was never about the money. I don't need the money or the phone. It was a test of your character.
If you had paid me back the money I would have donated it for a good cause. For example to a charity against human trafficking and child labour in Thailand.
I am asking you to do the same, this way you could show good morals. To donate the value of the phone (~32000 baht) would be a great gesture and I would also feel that my money was not wasted. If you have a good heart and compassion for others, please do it.
I know your english language skills are limited and I doubt that 'google translate' will be able to translate this letter into good thai, please ask a friend with good english skills to translate it for you properly.
:-)
Thank you
Den
