Thailand is 12 hours ahead of Montana time. As a result, I have been having difficulties sleeping at night without waking up at 5am. That being said, THAILAND is AMAZING!! Pre-service Training has been a constant “go-go-go” with language training, meeting with people, and cultural training. Not to mention the amazing meals, usually consisting of rice, egg, vegetables, and some sort of meat. Luckily, I learned exactly what I need to say to get food outside of the hotel that our training group is staying at.
While it is new and amazing and beautiful here, it is not without hardship. PST is difficult and demanding. Language sessions are several hours long, and are only communicated in Thai. The language is new and difficult, and although I put time in studying the vocabulary, the sentence structure is complicated and seems unnatural as of now. I’m glad that I developed the patience that I have right now, as even if it gets more difficult, (and it most likely will) I will be able to cope with the difficulty.
One thing that I have been thinking about after getting here is what I will be doing at my individual site. After some introspection, I discovered that tutoring English would be great for me, as it is something that I enjoy. I communicated this to my program director, so we will see if this changes anything. I also learned that our group is to focus on the “Let Girls Learn” program, which seeks to target education gaps between genders around the world. To what extent I will be actually able to implement a program incorporating the ideals of this initiative is still up in the air, as I don’t want to over-value my limited understanding and come off as a classically conceited American. That being said, I will do what I can with this goal in mind.
Tomorrow, I will learn how to maintain my bicycle and ride about 5 miles around Singburi, which doesn’t sound much like training and looks to be a great break in the language training thus far. Wednesday, I will leave the hotel that I am staying at and travel to another province to begin more intense and individualized language training. Let’s get this show on the road!!!
