swift they Foxes are holding their own Pawnee but have been extirpated in other places. In 1995 were designated "warranted but precluded" from the Us. Fish and wildlife Threatened and Endangered List. They have been successfully reintroduced in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and other reintroduction programs are underway. Loss of shortgrass and mixed-grass habitat dooms them, and they are also vulnerable to coyote and Red Fox predation. Coyotes kill them outright but usually don't eliminate the entire popula tion, whereas Red Foxes harass them, driving them from their dwindling territories. Red Foxes may actually be a bigger menace than Coyotes because the encounters are more frequent. In fact, some recent studies suggest Swift Foxes may actually fare better when Coyotes keep Red Foxes in check. Wolves might be even more effective. Historically, wolves were the dominant canid in North Dakota's grasslands. When the wolves, major predators of both Coyotes and Red Foxes but not Swift Foxes, disappeared, so did swift Foxes.
