In parallel, with the loss of acrosome integrity, the ability of spermatozoa to undergo AR after ZP stimulation progressively decreased. In fact, an inverse relationship (R2 = 0.992) linked the incidence of ZPs induced AR and the field intensity. In detail, the highest percentage of ZP induced AR (approximately 30%) was recorded in CTR and ELF-treated cells until 0.5 mT as showed in Fig. 3. The percentage of ZP-induced AR started to decrease at 0,75 mT (about 14%) reaching the minimum value (tending to 0) in samples exposed to a field of ≥1 mT.
On the basis of the previous results, in vitro matured oocytes were fertilized with in vitro capacitated spermatozoa under CTR condition or exposed to ELF-EMF with intensities of 0.5, 0.75 and 1 mT. As summarized in Table 1, only the field intensity >0.5 mT was able to progressively inhibit the fertilization rate, the polyspermy rate and the mean number of spermatozoa/polyspermic oocytes. All these parameters were first significatively reduced at 0.75 mT (p < 0.01 vs. CTR) and showed a further reduction at 1 mT (p < 0.01 vs. 0.75 mT).
