Significant differences were observed between rehabilitation
techniques for vegetation diversity, tree density, and overall forest
cover. The higher tree diversity, tree density, plant diversity and
forest cover seen in the KGBRP sites compared to the basic rehabilitation
sites is thought to be due to the fences used, the planting
regimes or a combination of these factors. Given that Rhizophora
apiculata seedlings planted at the KGBRP sites had a survival rate of
8e26.8 %, and that all planting attempts at basic sites had 100%
mortality, the fencing appears to be important for the survival of
planted seedlings as well as for the natural recovery of forests (GIZ
unpublished data). Importantly, although the surviving R. apiculata
