We performed a colony assay of EPCs to estimate the effects of C-COP intake on blood vessels.EPCs are recruited fron bone marrow, circulate in the blood, and play an important role in repairing endothelial cells at damaged sites in tissues. The number of EPCs falls and their function become moer impaired as the risk for cardiovascular disease becomes higher. EPC senescence and decreases in telomerase activity might be involved in these impairrments , according to a study using SHR/Ism and DOCA-sait hypertensive rats Among the subjects in this study, the numbers and sizes of the colonies before and after intake were examined using peripheral blood of five subjects without the smoking habit because EPC have been reported to show a negative correlation with smoking. The 4 week C-COP intake significantly increased the numbers of colonies(Fig.2).EPC differentiation and senescence is associated with angiotensin II, and 4 week administration of ramipril.an ACE inhibitor, produced a 1.5-fold increase in circulating EPC in patients wite coronary artery disease. On the other hand, there have been no reports that food components can increase EPC in peripheral blood. We plan to determine whether C-COP can reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease by repairing blood vessels in addition to reducing hypertension.
In conclusion, intake of C-COP for 4 week reduced blood pressure in midly hypertensive subjects by inhibiiting both ACE and PRA, and increasea EPC activity in the peripheral blood. This study indicated that food componentes can inhibit PRA and increase EPC activity. C-COP might help protect blood vessels through activation of EPCs as well as by reducing blood pressure.
