Across the world, millions of young people are unemployed. Not only is this a problem for society, it is also a concern for our customers.
As the largest private sector employer in the UK and an engine of opportunity, we’re using our Scale for Good to help more young people in our business and our communities, to fulfil their potential by equipping them with the skills they need to start successful careers. Young people are critical to the success of our business – they are our colleagues and customers of the future.
Here at Tesco, we employ around 70,000 young people in the UK, and with our support, there is no limit to where they can go. The world-class training we offer to our colleagues helps kick-start careers, and has taken many from shop floor to boardroom.
We’ve also set up a UK Young People’s Panel (YPP), which ensures we can best understand how young people both in our business and in our communities can be best supported.
In our communities there’s a growing gap between young people and the world of work, with around 750,000 young people unemployed – the next generation feel that they are not being given the information, skills and opportunities they need to start successful careers.
We have given hundreds of thousands of people their first taste of work and helped over 6,000 long-term unemployed get back into the jobs market through our Regeneration Partnerships. We’ve also opened up our training materials to all young people through our Tesco Youth Academy.
