In the study, a double oscillating-fan cooling device using electromagnetic force is proposed.
The device uses only one electromagnet to actuate two fan sheets.
The main advantages of the device are its simple structure and the fact that the driving current can be either 3 V–12 V DC PWM or AC so it is compatible with most electronic devices.
The resonant frequency tests show that the fan length and the fan thickness of the fan sheets extremely influence the resonant frequency.
The fan width influences the resonant frequency slightly when uniform material is adopted for making fan sheet. The influence of the position of the magnet on resonant frequency is very limited when it is close to bottom end.
The flow rate and the noise test shows that the model can provide the flow rate of 154.89 l/min and the sound pressure level of 28.5 dB while the power consumption is 0.65 W.
The thermal tests show that the device can provide cooling ability similar to the rotary fan while consuming 40% of the power of the rotary fan.
It shows not only a good cooling ability but also great potential for structural reliability and design flexibility.
