Majority of the respondents (n ¼ 567) expressed chances of possible future flood in the next 20 years. Respondents who had catastrophic flood experience expected higher levels of future flood levels. For instance, the high flood water level of 1.51 to 2m was expected by those people having the 1971 flood experience than people who do not have (34.4 per cent versus 11.6 per cent). Similarly, more non-experienced respondents (47.1 per cent) expected low future flood water levels of below 0.5m than the experienced ones (23.5 per cent) (Table IV). This corroborates with other studies that suggest the importance of flood experience in shaping the perception of flood risk.
