Doing the right thing — that is what we do.
2. We care for our families and we care for our friends
3. because it is the right thing to do.
4. We care for each other in our cities, in our villages, at school, and at home.
5. And we care for each other at work, because well, it is the right thing to do.
6. We care for each other at work by protecting each other's health,
7. protecting each other from the hazards — the dangers — at work:
8. chemical hazards such as harmful liquids and gases,
9. biological hazards such as bacteria and viruses,
10. and physical hazards such as too much noise and heat.
11. We also protect each other from the hazards of repeated movements
12. such as sewing, assembling parts, and typing,
13. where we make the same movement again and again.
14. And we protect each other from the mental and emotional stress at work
15. that can cause illnesses and injuries.
16. And the reason we protect each other from all these hazards is simple,
17. because at the end of the day
18. all of us want to go home in good health
19. to care for ourselves, our families, and our friends.
20. It is the right thing to do.
21. Now at work, the name for all this protection is "industrial hygiene,"
22. which is also called "occupational hygiene,"
23. but it all means the same thing.
24. Both "industrial" and "occupational" mean "work."
25. And "hygiene" means "protecting health."
26. In other words, we're simply talking about protecting people's health at work.
27. When we do this, we plan ahead
28. so we can identify these dangers at work
29. and study these dangers at work
30. so that we can decrease those dangers, or better yet,
31. remove those dangers completely,
32. no matter what kind of work we do, no matter how big or how small.
33. For example, people's breathing and health can be harmed by possible hazards
34. such as dust or spray painting.
35. These hazards can occur at large operations such as construction sites
36. or industrial painting sites,
37. at small and medium operations,
38. and with one person working alone.
39. But regardless of the size and type of work,
40. the people who are key to all of this are the industrial hygienists.
41. They are the champions that protect workers.
42. They are the eyes and ears of the workplace,
43. the ones who help find health hazards and correct them.
44. So, how do they do it?
45. First, they start with expert, scientific knowledge in chemistry, biology
