Prescribed burning is advantageous to both silviculture
and biodiversity (Vanha-Majamaa et al., 1996; Penttila ¨ and
Kotiranta, 1996). Prescribed burning promotes natural
regeneration, and there are about 30 rare and endangered
species that benefit from burning (Annila, 1998). Suitable
areas for prescribed burning are moraine regeneration
cutting areas, where soil is neither too fertile nor too barren,
and where the size and shape of area allow safe burning.
Currently, the forest management recommendations given
to practice and certification indicators favour the increase in
areas of burning, whenever it is suitable to accomplish.
