Beckett, Peternelj-Taylor, and Johnson (2003)
described the results of incarceration as aging in
place and engaging in low levels of self-care, both
of which increase the likelihood that parolees
will return to the community with serious
health problems. Returnees (recently released
inmates) generally do not consult regularly with
a health care provider (Parrish, 2003). Such
neglect of health has significant personal and
societal impacts, the latter partly due to the rising
health care costs associated with aging and
chronic disease in this vulnerable population
(Formby & Abel, 1997).
