Mr. Lewis’s general attitude to education is that violence is undesirable and that if children are to develop self-respect they must be respected by others, including their teachers. Mr. Lewis first abolished corporal punishment in the upper part of his school. When the head teacher responsible for discipline in the junior school left, he was able to abolish it there as well. It was, however, difficult to get the last few teachers to stop hitting children unofficially. Finally, after a long slow process of reform, all the staff and children accepted that corporal punishment was unnecessary.
