Week 1
Welcome to English Composition 1: Achieving Expertise. It’s great to be getting started. This is the first week of a twelve-week course where you will gain a foundation for college-level writing valuable for nearly any field. Students will learn how to read carefully, write effective arguments, understand the writing process, engage with others' ideas, cite accurately, and craft powerful prose. We will create a workshop environment where your colleagues will provide feedback on your writing and you will have the chance to read and respond to other writers in our class. As I write this email, we have nearly 60,000 students enrolled from all over the world. I hope you will take a few minutes to fill in our pre-course survey so we can learn more about each other.
The website for our course is now ‘live’ and you can get started by logging in. My goal in this first week is to establish a positive, inclusive community for us all to work together on improving our writing. In the video lectures this week and through the informal writing activities in the discussion forums, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the writing process, what academic writing is, and how to read critically.
On the course home page, you will notice a series of tabs running down the left-hand side of the screen. I encourage you to spend some time getting acquainted with the class platform and the navigation menu. A good start would be the Start Here tab near the top of the menu. There you will find step-by-step instructions telling you what to do next.
