coach has to deal with the above-mentioned
communication problems by the following
means:
. The coaches and athletes cannot control
the spectators of the game and their
reactions, the opponents' behavior, the
noise and the referee whistling. Especially
when the team plays away, the coach has
to teach his players to be focused, calm
and to minimize the negative influence
that outside factors can have.
. Most of the professional basketball teams
have players from different countries.
Therefore when the coaches are facing
situations like that they must give
directions in many languages, or have a
professional assistant who knows many
languages, or accept the language known
to most players. By working to clarify the
way language is used, the coach is moving
closer to a shared understanding (Duck,
1993).
. Since time is limited during games,
coaches and athletes should know how to
cooperate under stressful circumstances.
Coach's messages should be clear and
short. On the other hand athletes should
stay focused, even when they are tired.
. Athletes, depending on their mental
ability or past experience, understand
directions, strategies, and tactics more
easily. The coach should be aware of the
ability of every young player-student
when encoding messages, in order to
avoid confusion and bad execution.
. Factors such as the stress of the game,
fatigue, athlete's personality, team
cohesion, team environment and coach's
personality can affect the athlete's
attitude. Coaches should be aware of
these problems and should help their
athletes to face them effectively.
. Personal problems or aims outside the
team could distract the athletes. Coaches
can help on personal problems, family
problems, age problems, school
problems, and financial problems.
