There were two stages of transect walk conducted in this fieldwork. The informal transect walk was initially carried out within six villages picked based on information obtained from previous activities in order to find out two most appropriate villages for the study. Another was the formal survey conducted after interested villages had been selected. This was made with local authorities i.e. village headmen. Simultaneously, the global positioning system (GPS) was used as ground control points for determining the land use types which can be integrated in the image classification process. A good rule of thumb of the ground control points should be at a minimum of 30 to 50 points per land use/land cover class (Congalton and Green 1999). In this study, a total of 256 GPS points (122 points from Doykao and 134 points from Paklong) or around 30 points per land use class, were recorded during June to July, 2014 (approximately 4-5 months after acquisition date of Landsat image 2014).
