The “graying of America” is not a uniform trend. The highest proportion of older people are found in Florida, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Iowa, West Virginia, and Arkansas. However, many more states are undergoing an aging trend. In 1996, Florida was the population over the age of 65. Yet, as Figure 12-4 shows, in about 25 years, more than half of the states will have a greater proportion of elderly than Florida does now.
