In this review we also referred to some of the functional
impairments and co-morbidities that commonly occur in
children with ADHD. It is vital that clinicians are aware of
these factors during treatment planning and assessment. Such
impairments are likely to leave children at risk for poorer outcomes
in adulthood such as unemployment and difficult social
relationships (Barkley et al. 2006). However, a major focus for
future research should be on the development of interventions
that target some of the functional impairments in children with
ADHD. Even long-term treatment with medication is currently
unable to normalize functioning outcomes such as social
functioning and academic performance (Nijmeijer et al. 2008;
Langberg & Becker 2012).
