Nominally off-road driving in Western Australia is restricted by the Control ofVehicles (Off-Road Areas) Act 1978 (WA), but in practice there are no patrols in areas such as the Central Coast. Land managers may designate sacrificial areas for intensive use by off-road vehicles in order to protect the remainder, but many recreational drivers disregard such restrictions. Since much of the 4WD activity is associated with camping, provision of clearly marked campsites might reduce exploratory off-road vehicle use, and fences or barriers alongside tracks could reduce braiding
