Now, there's an original uniform!
There is also the problem that uniforms place a completely unnecessary financial burden on the parents sending their child to school. Unless the school pays for the uniform, mandating certain clothing effectively makes you have to buy a new wardrobe for your child, and uniforms aren't cheap. At my old school, shirts cost $35, pants cost $50, skirts cost $50, etc... We tried to buy clothing used, but uniforms were a still significant investment for my parents, especially since my brother, my sister, and I were all attending this school at the same time. It doesn't help that, due to children's unruly habit of growing quickly, we had to buy new sets every couple of years. Mandated uniforms are just another financial barrier for anyone who is struggling to afford a good education for their child. Like a few others have mentioned, maybe we should shift the focus from what kids are wearing to what they are learning.
