Statement of purpose. Research reveals no widely accepted methods of measuring the value of implementing Knowledge Management in information technology organizations. Credible approaches are necessary to win sponsorship and sustain support from decision-makers.
This study clarifies the meaning of Knowledge Management and describes its intrinsic value to organizations in general. It clearly differentiates between data, information and knowledge, describes organizational structures, policies and practices that facilitate KM, and reports on why Knowledge Management cannot be achieved through technology alone. Most importantly, three measurement methods are explored and examined based on data gathered from in-depth interviews with experts and practitioners in information technology and from a review of relevant literature.
