A qualitative method
employing in-depth interviews was selected because it allows the participant to share their
experiences and understanding of the phenomena in their own words, as well as allows the
researcher to ascertain the meaning of the participants’ lived experience (McCracken, 1988). The
ability to clarify meaning and ask additional questions of participants about their experiences is
another primary reason for the use of a qualitative method of inquiry (Spiggle, 1994).
