NEW ENGLAND UNIVERSITY
New England University (NEU), located in the greater Boston area, was founded in the late 1940s in
order to provide an affordable private education to students in New England and its environs. Many of its
students were veterans of World War II attending the college on the GI Bill. It was always seen as a
respectable alternative to Harvard, MIT, Wellesley, and other more elitist and expensive private
universities in this area. Its liberal arts undergraduate program enrolled about 1800 students and its school
of management enrolled about 600 students. The university also enrolled over 1000 students in its
continuing education and graduate programs. About 90 percent of the undergraduates were residential
students while the remainder were commuters.
