While other Muslims argued, for example, that speech was an attribute of God and therefore uncreated, Mu‘tazilis believed that it could not be uncreated as this would compromise the unity of God. Given that the Qur’an was the speech of God, the Mu‘tazilis argued that the Qur’an was created in time. For them, anyone who believed that the Qur’an was an uncreated attribute of God compromised the absolute unity of God.
