Matt Knudson received his B.S. in Electronics Engineering in 2005, followed by his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2009, both from Oregon State University. His engineering and research backgrounds have been in the field of dynamics and control, particularly model-free control techniques for autonomous robotics. Dr. Knudson’s recent focus and research interests include autonomous navigation as well as promoting coordination in teams of robots without explicit directives or communication. The target applications of such research largely include terrestrial and extraterrestrial robotic exploration tasks. Terrestrially, autonomous robotics could benefit disaster response search-and-rescue or contribute to expanding ocean exploration. In the case of solar system exploration, adaptive robotic teams could dramatically improve efficiency both in time and resource consumption for making new discoveries.
