This accumulated baggage from the past is usually an
impediment to taking advantage of future hardware and software possibilities. Consequently, the
paper closes with a step-by-step procedure by which any user can migrate over a period of years
into an environment where he is not constrained to the iron of any particular hardware vendor. At
the end of this paper, I will revisit the issue of standardization in light of the proposed migration
path and indicate what sort of standardization activity might assist this process.
