The migration of the term leader to the business world was a late nineteenth-century novelty. The
word was first used for a small circle of men whose names are familiar from their conscience salving, philanthropic organizati
ons: Rockefeller, Carnegie, Vanderbilt, Ford. As corporations
expanded, the man in charge -- the chief executive took on the mantle of leader. Now the leader
did not have to risk his life or his life savings; one just needed an appointment by a cooperative board of trustees
