The Financial Reporting Lab is an initiative of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) to bring together companies and investors to improve the effectiveness of corporate reporting. The lab operates in a different way to the more traditional standard-setting activities of the FRC and IASB by providing a ‘safe’ place to experiment with reporting. Typical projects involve:
Testing new reporting formats with investors, and asking investors to indicate where management could provide more valuable information.
Gathering and sharing evidence from the wider market to provide feedback on forms of reporting that are more valuable to shareholders.
Projects completed to date (link to FRC website) include:
three papers on net debt and cash flow reporting;
work on market risk disclosures;
piloting various options for a ‘single figure’ for directors’ remuneration prior to BIS legislating for change; and
an assessment of audit committee reporting to provide insight on effective approaches in this area.
