The benefits of PTCA compared to CABG include the lower rates of mortality and concurrent morbidity and the lower cost of the procedure. A stent is often introduced into the artery to prevent re-stenosis. However, the apertures and ends of the stent may be overgrown by tissue, which causes re-occlusion of the coronary artery. During the recent years, stents have been processed pharmaceutically to prevent occlusion (Stone et al., 2004). In the future, most stents will probably be medical stents.
