baseddiet.ThirtytwomaturedmaleChoklabreedofsheep(2–3 yearsoldand
46.970.95kgaveragebodyweight)wereequallydistributedinarandomizedblockdesign
in fourgroupswithsimilaraverageageandmeanbodyweight.Allgroupswerefeddiets
containingroughageandconcentrateina70:30ratio.Controlgroup(C)wasfedwith
cenchrus(Cenchrusciliaris) strawasanonlyroughagesource,whereasotherthreegroups
(T1,T2andT3)werefedwithcenchrusstraw,ardu(Ailanthusexcelsa) leavesandkhejri
(Prosopiscineraria) leaves(50:25:25)asroughagesources.AnimalsintheT1groupwerenot
supplementedwithanyfeedadditive;whereas,animalsintheT2andT3groupswere
addedwith2%potassiumnitrateoftheconcentratemixtureand2%fumarateofthedry
matter(DM)intake,respectively.Therewerenoeffects(P40.10)ofanytreatmentsonDM
intake,BWchangeornutrientutilization.Nretentionincreasedintreatmentgroups
comparedwithcontrolduetogreateramountofNintake.Concentrationsofglucose,
haemoglobin,albumin,bloodureanitrogenandcreatinine,anddifferentbloodenzyme
concentrationswerenotaffected(P40.10)byanytreatments,butconcentrationsoftotal
protein,globulinandcholesterolinbloodwerehigherforT1andT3thanforCandT2
treatments.MicrobialNsupplyintermsofdigestibleOMintakeordigestibleOMretainedin
therumendidnotdifferamongtreatments.Totalamylaseandcarboxymethylcellulase
concentrationsweresimilaramongthegroups.However,totalxylanaseactivityincreased
in T3groupthanothergroups.Areductioninaveragepropionateconcentration(P¼0.020)
wasobservedfortheT2treatmentincomparisonwiththeCandT1groups.Concentrations
of ammoniaN,totalNandtrichloroacetate-perceptibleNwerelowerincontrolthanother
treatments,butconcentrationsofsolubleNwerenotaffected(P40.05)byanytreatments.
In conclusion,fumarate(2%ofDM)maybeincludedinthedietofsheepfedwithardu–
khejrileaveswithoutaffectingnutrientutilizationandrumenfermentation,whereasardu–
khejrileavesdietcontainingnitrate(0.6%ofDM)mayaffectrumenfermentation.
