The municipal solid waste self sufficiency indicator
developed initially for urban areas, that hold treatment
facilities, was applied for the first time at a national level, to
the Romanian solid waste management system. The obtained
results of this indicator provide a clear image on the capacity
of the national system to close the material flows through the
recovery of its MSW. Also, the results obtained in the case of
Romania, based on the current treatment options scenario,
could be compared to the scenarios detailed by Fragkou et al.
(2010) that developed this indicator.
