Background
Duration of untreated psychosis is related to poor outcome
[1–5]. Most clinical and psychosocial deterioration in
psychosis occurs within the first few years of the onset of
the illness [6, 7], and hence there is a growing trend for
identification and treating psychosis at the early stage [8,
9]. The early stages of psychosis are frightening and
challenging experiences for the carers of these patients
[10]. Unusual behaviors in a son, daughter or sibling
generate emotions such as fear, apprehension, sadness and
sometimes guilt and anger in carers [10].
In India, the majority of patients with mental illness live
with their families [11], they are the main source of support, [12] and they regularly participate in decision-making
regarding health care and treatment compliance [13]. As
families are actively involved in care giving for patients,
they are very much affected by the illness [14]. More than
75 % of the carers of persons with first episode psychosis
(FEP) were at high risk of developing psychiatric illnesses.
Further, these carers also showed dysfunction in social role
and impairment, especially marked in social and leisure
activities [15]. Studying carers’ experience and helpseeking behaviours is important in many ways.
