Using our student perception of learning environment survey administered to students on the final day of class, we constructed seven theoretical variables that have shown to be influenced by formal learning spaces: engagement, enrichment, flexibility, effective use, student learning outcomes, room/course fit, and confidence (Walker et al., 2011). The students in the ALCs returned significantly higher scores on all variables except room/course fit, which was still positive, and effective use, which was not significant (see Table 9). In the replication study, students scored the ALC rooms in a similar pattern, though the negative results for effective use were significant, and the ratings for enrichment were slightly negative but not significant.
