exchanger network obtained by simply minimizing utility
cost. However, the total energy consumption was 42.4 MW,
which is a little higher compared with that while only minimizing
the utility cost. This difference is believed to be the
tradeoff between the utility and capital cost. On one hand,
sufficient heat exchange between the process streams results
in the reduction of utility cost, but on the other hand, it also
leads to the requirement of more heat exchangers, which
raises the capital cost. After obtaining the optimized heat
exchange network, it was found that the gross energy saving
was 54.9% (Table 8).
