The results for the ethanol concentrations
found in the different energy drinks
are listed in Table I. Although these results
are within established limits for
non-alcoholic beverages within the
United States, the results were still surprising
because the ethanol was found
more often and in higher concentrations
than previously reported for soft drinks.
Goldberger et al. (10) only found ethanol
concentrations above 0.06% w/v in 4 of
29 (13.8%) soft drinks, and the highest
reported alcohol concentration was
0.096% w/v. In contrast, 13 of 27 (48.1%)
of the energy drinks tested had ethanol
concentrations above 0.06% w/v, and 9 of
27 had concentrations higher than
0.096% w/v ethanol.
This level was high enough to give positive
breath alcohol concentrations on the
portable breath-testing device used less
than 1 min after the end of drinking on 11
of 27 (40.7%) energy drinks, with the
range of results 0.006–0.015 g/210 L. The
