To explain the idea that each part is the same as the whole, Hua-yan teaching uses this story, called “The Net of Indra:”
The god Indra has a net in which each part of the net is decorated with a jewel. So each jewel reflects the image of every other jewel, and all the jewels collectively reflect all the jewels.
In this way, the jewels limitlessly reflect each other, so all the parts reveal the whole.
