Aloe leaves are well known as a source of phenolic compounds that are used medicinally and as an additive (‘‘bitters’’) to various beverages (Reynolds 1985). Phenolics have been previously reported to occur in the nectar of A. littoralis Bak. and to deter feeding by honey bees in North America, where A. littoralis is cultivated as an ornamental plant (Hagler and Buchman
1993).
