As an example in the Philippines, the total number of vessels in the municipal fishery sector was estimated at 20,000 units in the whole country in 1984, of which 83% were non-motorized. This grew to an estimated 500,000 units after 40 years with a higher percentage of motorized boats. The total number and tonnage of commercial fishing boats rose from 3265 to 150.260 tons, respectively, in 1988 to 4014 and 216,090 tons (increase of 23% and 44%), in 1994. Catch per unit effort, as measured in tons/horsepower (t/hp) for the total small pelagic fish catch from municipal (small-scale) fisheries in the Philippines has decline from 2.9 t/hp in 1948 to an estimated 0.20 t/hp in 2000.
