Ethiopian mustard (Brassica carinata) also has tremendous potential as an oilseed crop for biofuel production and bioindustrial feedstock, and it is a candidate for the production of VLCFAs (very long chain fatty acids). One study on B. carinata demonstrated that the overexpression of KCS (3-ketoacyl-CoA synthase), the rate-limiting enzyme for seed VLCFA production isolated from Crambe abyssinica combined with RNAi-FAD2 silencing/reduction in oleoyl desaturation results in an increase in the level of erucic oil up to 58%, a net increase of 22% as compared to wild type (Taylor et al., 2010).
