The Governments of Thailand have paid high level of attention to enhance higher education institutions or universities, such as the establishment of Chulalongkorn University in 1916, Thammasat University in 1933 and the professional universities.
In order to enhance development-oriented institution and development distribution, National Institute of Development Administration and geographical universities have been established.
Private Higher Education Institutions and Open Universities were established in 1969 and 1972.
One of the most highlights of Higher Education in Thailand has been the new system of public university called “Autonomous Public University”, in order to enhance speedy and de-bureaucratized higher education institutions, especially to strengthen and empower them much more academic freedom and excellence.
Office of the Higher Education Commission defined ‘Autonomous Public University’ as any independent and self managed public university. 4
The autonomous public universities in Thailand have been monitored by the ‘Office of Higher Education Commission’. The university has not only been de-bureaucratized but also non-public enterprise. The government has allocated the university the budget by related law in order to assure and maintain the educational quality.
