Formal and informal group form in orgenizations for different reasons. The Real World 9.1 discusses the formation of a formal group at General Motors. Formal group are sometimes called official or assigned groups, and informal groups may be called unofficial or emergent groups. Formal groups gather to perform various tasks and inclued an executive and staff, standing committees of the board of directors, projedt task forces, and temporary committees. An example of a formal group was the task force assembled by The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), whose mission was to design the Goolsby Leadership Academy that bridges academics and practice.
