The floating cover is made of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane.
The geomembrane is black, 1 mm thick, 7 m wide and of smooth surfaces. The typical properties of the selected HDPE geomembrane are listed in Table 1. This kind of geomembrane is made of first quality polyethylene resins. Properly selected and dispersed carbon black is added to the geomembranes at 2% to 3%, which is resistant to the significant deterioration caused by weathering. Plus the highly effective chemical ultraviolet stabilizers to extend the life span of the geomembrane, the projected life of the geomembrane can be in excess of 100 years (GSE,2000a). Using high quality virgin polyethylene resins, the geomembrane has an excellent chemical resistance to a great number and combination of chemicals (GSE,2000b). Therefore, HDPE geomembranes are an ideal material for floating covers.
