From the determination for the first time of MACAN in the 24 most consumed F&V in 4 European countries, we show that MACAN are a major part—in many cases more than 50%—of the total polyphenol content and total antioxidant capacity in F&V. It is estimated that F&V provide a daily per capita intake of about 200 mg of MACAN. Future studies of methods for the analysis of MACAN and of dietary intakes in different populations are needed to elucidate more fully their contribution to the health effects associated with F&V consumption and with the intake of polyphenols and dietary antioxidants.
